I haven't had time to do the full MHM since having a full-time job in the summer. I'm doing information security for a company and I love it so much, but it's seriously putting a damper on the 5-hour hair routine that is the Maximum Hydration Method. In order to care for my increasingly drying (but still very well defined hair) I began to do what I am calling a Half-MHM.
1. Cleansing: I do not leave this in my hair for any extended period of time. I mix the baking soda, conditioner, and water, shake it up, apply it in two large sections. After I finish with the second, I immediately rinse it out of the first, then pin that up and rinse it out of the second. This takes substantially less time than applying it and leaving it in for the rest of the 30 minutes.
Deep Condition: I skip this entirely. I've found that my hair doesn't respond as well as others to deep conditioning, and I have a history of getting the same results without it. Since this is the most time consuming process, I simply skip it.
Clay: I skip this entirely as well. Honestly, I think this is great at getting extra sticky ingredients off of your hair, but after your hair knows the shape it wants to take, you don't need it for curl definition anymore. It is also incredibly time consuming, so I skip it.
2. Leave-In Conditioner: I use a very thick homemade, coconut cream / creamed coconut based conditioner [will write a review in the future], since I haven't done the DC. Because of the intensity of this conditioner, I know I need to do the full MHM at least once a week, to get rid of any extra oils or sticky substances.
3. Gel: This is one of the most important steps of MHM in my opinion; it seals in all the goodness you've done so far. I use a Flax seed and Xanthan gum based gel, sometimes adding Marshmallow Root and / or Slippery elm. I make it very thick, and apply it with a colour applicator bottle. Works wonders.
So this is my new, daily routine. It takes an hour on average. Here are results from last night:
